Cuomo's Emmy

The media’s love affair with Governor Andrew Cuomo is over. The breakup occurred a few weeks ago when Melissa DeRosa leaked the news that more people died in the nursing homes than the administration had claimed. In a few short days, Cuomo plummeted from the heights of a man winning an Emmy for his purportedly masterful Covid briefings to the lows of a, rightfully, besieged man. Even his own state’s attorney is baying at his heels.

Cuomo being awarded an Emmy seemed odd at the time, but the ways of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences are not for us to ponder. The Academy deemed his press conferences worthy of the honor, claiming they brought information and comfort to the people, and who were we to wonder.

But maybe the Academy knew their business better than we realized. A television award implies a fine-tuned on screen presence, and isn’t that what Cuomo gave us? Let him keep his Emmy: he earned it and everything that comes with it.
