HR 1083

Jahana Hayes sponsored HR 1083, which would increase dependency and indemnity compensation for survivors of service members.  Since February of 2023, neither Hayes nor cosponsor Joe Courtney has been able to convince more than sixty something Democrats to support their bill.  Cynic that I am, I won’t be surprised if Democrats rally around HR 1083 during election season.  But if Hayes and Courtney really care about survivors, they would admit that the only way to have fewer military deaths is to challenge the foolish, dangerous Biden/Democrat policies that get service members killed.

It would have been pure common sense for them to have demanded that Biden not scrabble out of Afghanistan and leave behind billions of dollars worth of military equipment for our enemies to use to target our service members and allies.  Apparently Hayes and Courtney did not exercise such common sense. In fact, Courtney issued a statement of support, which was later taken down.1

How about a commitment to address compensation for survivors by not making more dead, wounded, disabled soldiers, sailors, air force members, and Marines? Remember Kabul Airport?  Those families are still crying.  Look around the world as it crumbles for lack of leadership.  Our people in the mideast are under rocket and drone attack every day.  With only one more year of weak, feckless Biden in the White House (staff now out of protective custody after the insurrection this past weekend) China may not be able to resist attacking Taiwan.  Then what? More survivors of dead service members?  How many other hot spots are going to burst into flame?

Why are Hayes and Courtney, Congress members who hold the purse strings, not demanding that Congress stop giving billions of our tax dollars to Iran, Ukraine, and illegal immigrants and give it to the survivors?  Of course, survivors could use a raise, but we don’t need all of those billions.  Please do spend a big chunk on the homeless veterans;  but honestly, I wouldn’t mind a free new cell phone and a gift card.  Oh, and free hotel rooms when I travel would be nice, too. 2

So, the only way to have fewer military deaths is for Congress to stand up to the Biden administration and the party and challenge the foolish, dangerous policies that get service members killed;  but Hayes and Courtney have demonstrated over and over that they don’t have the stomach for a political fight.  So, go home.  You can;  our dead can’t.
